Eyjolfur Isolfsson is the Chief Riding Teacher at Hólar University. Ida Thellufsen teaches the riders seat, and the principles of posture, breath and awareness in riding.

The objective of the Equine Science Department is to provide professional education in the fields of horse breeding, horse training, horsemanship, and riding instruction. Furthermore, the department works towards development and innovation through research activities. It also promotes increased profitability in the sector, the spread of equestrian activities, and the welfare of horses. The department is an international centre for education and research in the fields of horse breeding, horse training, horsemanship, and riding instruction.

Hólar University has a formal collaboration agreement with The Icelandic Horse Trainers Association covering the further development of the programs and quality control of the education.

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

The education

Year 1: Equine Studies and basic Riding Instruction
The program provides a solid foundation in the core subjects of horse breeding, land management and economics. Main emphasis is on theoretical knowledge and practical skills in horse management, principles of riding/training the Icelandic horse and the basics of riding instruction. The aim is to prepare students for a vocation in the horse industry, such as horse breeding/farming, horse tourism, riding schools/seminars for beginners etc.

Year 2: Diploma in Young Horse Training
The course is a two-term course, consisting of theoretical and practical studies at Hólar University (30 ECTS) and practical training at an accredited place of training (30 ECTS).
The aim of the Horse Training course at Hólar University is to provide the student with theoretical knowledge, practical skills and the ability for independent work, in order to undertake young horse training and the further training of horses. At the end of the course the student should be able to work independently on a variety of tasks within the field of horsemanship and horse breeding, e.g. management of horse training establishments.

Year 3: Diploma – Trainer and Riding Instructor                                                          
The course is about 5 months in duration (30ECTS). The aim of the course is to provide the student with specialized knowledge and practical skills in riding and riding instruction. The student will be able to organize and implement programs in riding education, carry out specialist tasks in horse training, horse shows, competitions and other expert work in the field of horsemanship.
